Jerry Poole (Orange, CA) includes the
following in his flyers to explain why a Scrollsaw Club would want to be
an official Local Chapter of SAW. Please use this write up with your own
flyers.
"I have been asked why join SAW,
couldn't we just form our own club? The answer is yes, we could, but
not only is it a lot of work requiring some expertise and expense, but
also who is going to do it. Why re-invent the wheel? Maybe after
comparing some advantages to disadvantages it makes much more sense to
become a part of a much larger and established organization."
Advantages:
-
SAW gives us immediate credibility. In
affect we are not a startup operation.
-
We are part of a not-for-profit corporation.
-
We can enter venues such as craft
fairs, fundraiser, woodworking shows, etc. as a non-profit
organization.
-
We have access to advice and counsel
regarding all or any of our activities.
-
Big, big dollar savings from 1, 2, 3
and 4 above.
-
SAW has the benefit of communicating
with scrollers all over the US and indeed the world over the internet
or by mail and phone. The annual Directory provides this information.
-
SAW has conferences where we can meet
others from around the world, attend seminars and see the latest in
equipment and compete in meaningful competition.
-
SAW has an annual publication listing
hundreds of sources for information about patterns, clocks and
accessories, scroll saw videos, books, CD's magazines and news
letters. A terrific source of information.
-
SAW has a quarterly publication aimed
at keeping everyone informed of what is happening in the Association
plus providing tips and techniques to improve your scrolling. The
quarterly newsletter also brings information about what is happening
in other Local Chapters as well as providing a few patterns, generally
from new pattern designers.
-
A Local Chapter is immediately covered with General
Liability insurance from SAW.
-
SAW can provide a photo album online for Local Chapter
members to display their photos. These pictures can be uploaded by
your members at any time.
-
SAW can provide a subdomain of the SAW web site and
space for creating a web page for your Local Chapter.
-
SAW can provide a calendar on your web site where you
can post your club's events and meetings.
-
SAW can provide an email list program for sending out
newsletters online and reducing your mailing costs to nothing.
-
Opportunity Grant funds are available to Local Chapters
for programs/demonstrators at club meetings, or for SAW Members who
belong to a Local Chapter for scrolling class's.
New Benefits to forming a Local Chapter
Reasons 10 thru 15 above have been made available in
2004 and 2005. As we grow we hope to be able to offer even more not only
to our membership in general, but also to the Local Chapters.
Disadvantages
-
Are we paying dues to some remote place
and what for? Yes we are, but considering what we get in return it is
a bargain.
-
Will SAW control us? No, not at all.
Our activities are left solely to our discretion.
