Hal Shearer is a SAW member from Utah. In addition to being good with words (Hal won the contest to name the Scrollsaw Association of the World newsletter), he is also a very good scroller. Hal is also a past President of SAW and currently serves on the Board of Directors. Recently Hal has been working on a project to make a valance to go between kitchen cabinets. The finished project is an original design and truly indicative of the quality of Hal's work.

  The completed project   Detail

Hal says about the project:

The valance is 6"x36" out of 7/8" oak.

I just about turned it into some of my famous designer firestarter! I won't
tell where, but I almost cut off a lobe of one of the leaves where I had made
a change from the original pattern.

There are three sections: the two ends are 7" long each, and the center
is 22" total length, 36", 6" high It took me 33 hours to drill, cut and sand.
Many more to create the pattern.

This will go in my sister-in-law's kitchen, over the kitchen sink. She just got
new cabinets and this will span between the cabinets that come up on either
side of the sink, with a light behind shining through. There is a one inch piece
of molding up there already which will hide the top inch of the valance, thus
hiding the cuts I made. It will look like one long solid piece.
