Jim Gale

Jim Gale lives in Midhurst West Sussex England. I have been fretworking for many years now and originally worked with a treddle saw but now use a scroll saw adapted to take fretsaw blades. I have attached some pictures of house signs I produce but also carry out more intricate work as well such as the clock (The Pomeroy) that is attached as well it's cut from 3/16 Walnut and the design comes from Advanced Scroll Saw Clocks by John A Nelson

The two house signs were designed and cut by myself. Well Cottage is cut from 3mm Birch Ply, the letters then epoxied to perana pine stained and then the surrounding timber epoxied onto the backing and around the letters. The sign is unvarnished in the picture.

The Old Rectory is on a backing of 1/2" Marine Ply and the letters and motifs cut from 3mm Birch ply. the letters and motifs then epoxied to the backing, the whole painted white and then the letters picked out in black.

You can reach Jim if you have questions about his work here.

Jim Hall

Pattern of Prime Minister Tony Blair by Jim Hall

My name is Jim Hall and was born in Scotland in 1937. I am now retired and
live in Essex in England with my wife Margaret. We have two sons, both in
their 30's, the eldest is a graphic artist and lives in Wales, the youngest
lives in Scotland and is an engineer, but his passion is woodworking and is
well into turning, scrollsawing, intarsia etc. He lives with his wife Diane
and two children, a boy and a girl. What could be better than having a
grandson and a granddaughter. My working career was spent as a medical
laboratory scientist in various hospitals and universities in the UK and
also eight years in Kuwait. I also did a nine year spell in the British
army medical corps and saw active service in Malaya in the 50's and 60's. I
was introduced to scrollsawing, or fretsawing as we tend to call it in the
UK, by my Father on his treadle fretsaw when I was a young lad and have kept
my interest in it off and on when I could. I still have his treadle saw
which is still in good working condition. Over the last four years I have
been practicing the scrollsaw craft more seriously. I don't specialize in
any particular area, but enjoy the interior fretsawing on thin woods as much
as cutting in thick woods. I have included in the accompanying pictures
some of the range of work I enjoy doing and you can see more of my work on
my web site. There is very little in the way of support and suppliers here
in the UK for the hobby and I have to look to the States for innovative
designs, magazines etc. I tend to purchase patterns and books from all the
well known Companies in the States, in particular Judy Gale Roberts, Dirk
Boelman, Patrick Spielman and Jim Sweet, I am also fascinated with the
designs by Diana Thompson. I subscribe to SAW, The Berry Basket Pattern
Club and the Scrollsaw Workshop magazine. I have had an article published
by the magazine on signs of the Zodiac and am in the process of putting
together another article.

Barry Thomas

Prior to Christmas 1998 I hadn't made anything apart from putting up a few shelves etc.   After dropping some HEAVY hints I received a scrollsaw for Christmas and started making signs and small wooden toys.  Since then my interests and skills in woodwork have increased.  Most of the scrollsawing I produce is from the wonderfully humorous Winfield Collection or from Patrick Spielman.

I enjoy scrollsawing but also enjoy making wooden toys and small pieces of furniture using a variety of other tools.  I'd have a go at most plans but they MUST be fun and enjoyable to make.

You can see more of Barry's work and see some wonderful counted cross stitch done by Nibs at his web site.
